How to make it into Beatport's Top Charts

By Forward, June 14, 2021

Beatport is the world's largest electronic music platform. Founded in 2004 as the leading source of music for DJs, Beatport, a division of LiveStyle, is today the global home of electronic music for DJs, producers and their fans. The Beatport Music Store offers music in premium digital formats and provides unique music discovery tools created by and for DJs. Each week, Beatport's music collection is refreshed with hundreds of exclusive tracks from the world's best electronic music artists. Beatport has offices in Denver, Los Angeles and Berlin.

Every label and DJ should be concerned about their music getting into the Beatport charts but for this to happen first of all you need to release quality music as well as having a proper release promotion strategy (articles in magazines, blogs, premieres, promotions on social media like Facebook and Instagram), otherwise there is no chance to compete with the other releases coming out on the same day.

Secondly, you have to involve your real fans to gain enough momentum in a short time.

Finally, if you are a record label you need a distribution platform like Forward that will engage with your project and help you get the most out of your music.

How are the Beatport Top 100 charts calculated?

The Beatport Top 100 charts are calculated based on song sales over the last 7 days. The charts are updated once a day at around 3am Denver time. All advance sales are distributed equally for the first 5 days of a release's release and availability.

There are both track and release lists. The release lists fluctuate much more because there are far fewer purchases of full releases. As the volume is lower, the amount of buying needed to move up the lists is much less. A sale only counts as a purchase of a release if the release itself is purchased, not if all the tracks of a release are purchased separately. However, conversely, a purchase of a release does count towards sales of all the individual tracks on that release.

On Beatport, there are lists of the top 100 tracks in each genre and an overall chart combining the best-selling tracks across all genres. Beatport's top genres also have a HYPE chart, reserved for emerging labels that are part of the HYPE programme. This gives smaller labels a platform to get noticed. You can find out more about joining Beatport HYPE here.

What are the most important genres on Beatport?

The most important genres on Beatport in 2021 are Techno, Tech House, Drum N Bass and House. Melodic House and Techno are the fastest growing genres at the moment. Drum N Bass has seen a big increase and is also doing very well as it is now the number 3 genre, which is an interesting trend.

The difference between Beatport and other DSPs is that trends are seen as they happen, because the tastemakers are the DJs, and the DJs are the ones who traditionally choose what people dance to. So when DJs and promoters throw parties with a specific type of music, they buy their music on Beatport, which in turn influences the rest of the culture.

What is the process for determining genres and how are genre overlaps managed on Beatport?

Beatport currently has 32 genres of music but the shop is constantly changing and evolving along with the electronic music culture. Each small parcel of music has its own life and is a self-contained, self-breathing organism.

Beatport's curators are experts in their specific genres. They often classify genres according to what is on offer, but not always. Each curation team reviews all priority releases each week to ensure that the correct genres are assigned and will change them if they are incorrect. We have audio example charts that show the sound reference for each genre and will also update a track if it is already listed in the wrong genre.

Now that you know how the Beatport charts work, we can only wish you the best of luck, releasing good quality music and choosing the best electronic music distribution platform will simplify your work enormously.
